Head of the Graduate School / Professor of Art & Contemporary Visual CultureÌý
Ed is Professor of Art & Contemporary Visual Culture and Head of the Graduate School at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, where he provides academic leadership across postgraduate provision, fostering interdisciplinary approaches across artistic and design education and research. He also recently led the development of BA (Hons) Creative Intelligence and Innovation.
As Chair of the Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (RIKE) committee, he contributes to Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ’s distinctive research and knowledge exchange culture grounded in imaginative creative inquiry and inter-institutional collaboration, which has included partnerships with the University of Cambridge, University College London, as well as other international partners.
Beyond Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, he is a member of the Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD) Research Strategy Alliance, and he was Co-Chair of the Independent Higher Education (IHE) Research and Innovation Network. Ed is currently the IHE sector-appointed member at the Quality Council for UK Higher Education.
Prior to joining Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, Ed taught at the Cambridge School of Art (Anglia Ruskin University), where he served as Coordinator of Critical and Contextual Studies across BA and MA Fine Art programmes and received the Faculty Excellent Teacher Award in 2019. He previously spent a decade teaching at the London College of Communication (UAL) as Senior Lecturer in Photography Theory, teaching across BA and MA Photography.
As a photographic artist, writer, and educator, Ed’s work engages photography as an imaginal, durational, and research-led practice. Represented by HackelBury Fine Art (London) since 1998, his photographic work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally and is held in public and private collections. Key exhibitions includeÌýAgulhasÌýat HackelBury Fine Art;ÌýPicturing Eden, a five-year touring museum exhibition curated by Deborah Klochko for the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; andÌýModel LoveÌý(Arnolfini, Bristol; BAC, London), an intermedial collaboration with the experimental theatre company Bodies in Flight. A photographic monograph,ÌýStilled,Ìýwas published by Stanley/Barker in 2017, and he was also a core contributor to Flesh and Text: Devising Theatre with Bodies in Flight, published by Intellect Books (2025).
Alongside his artistic practice, Ed is a writer on photography, visual culture, and contemporary art. His writing has appeared in a range of publications, includingÌýHotshoe, and he has contributed commissioned essays for several photographic monographs, including Ian Macdonald’sÌýEtonÌý(2007), Lam Pok Yin and Chong Ng’sÌýThe Untimely Apparatus of Two Amateur PhotographersÌý(2019), and Kim Thue’s photobook,ÌýLode (2022).
